I like to play with Linux on my laptop. There is something more fun about it than Windows! I have downloaded and tried almost every distribution over the past 2 years. To date, Ubuntu has been to only one I have really stuck to using. I also use Ubuntu Server on an old desktop set up as a development LAMP server.

Canonical, the Ubuntu Linux commercial sponsor, is set to release version 7.10 Thursday – 10-18-2007.

Some of my favorite new features:

Support for multiple monitors

Compiz Fusion integration

Full read and write capability for all Windows partitions, including NTFS

Better wireless card support

If you don’t want to wait until Thursday to upgrade from Ubuntu 7.04 now, you can upgrade to the latest release cadidate and then update to the final release on Thursday.

The latest version of the widely-popular, easy-to-use Linux Distribution – Ubuntu was released today. Version 7.04, code-named Feisty Fawn includes (but not limited to) new tools for Windows migrations, wizard for installing codecs not originally included with Ubuntu; and an improved network manager [Release notes]. Ubuntu 7.04 is free, open-source and runs on multiple platforms.

The different desktop environment flavors of Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu) have also been updated to the 7.04 release.

I have played with Ubunutu with a dual-boot on my laptop. Since I love my iMac, I rarely use Linux or Windows. However, Ubuntu is one of the best distros I have played around with and I went through a phase where I tried them all.

I have only had two issues with Ubuntu.

Getting the BroadComm wireless card to work correctly. – I was able to resolve this fairly quickly with a visit to the excellent Ubuntu forums.

Getting the laptop to support an external LCD’s resolution in a dual-monitor set-up. I didn’t really need this, so I never fixed it.

The community support behind Ubuntu is amazing and the users are extremely loyal to the distrobution.
