I believe the preview button associated with posting a comment on a TXP had a lot to do with it. I may try to implement that same method here soon.

I also discovered this morning that TypePad offers a service similar to Akismet, TypePad AntiSpam that works with WordPress blogs and is compatible with the Akismet API. Although I haven’t tried it, I would be interested in hearing anyone’s experience with the plugin/service.

Being able to dynamically generate and call data is one of the greatest things about building a site with a content management system. Why should the power of a CMS engine be limited to storing, retrieving and displaying content? Why not also use this engine to generate classes within your HTML that can also may your site’s design dynamic?

When I began working on designing a theme for Textpattern, I was heavily influenced by my previous work with the Sandbox WordPress theme. The dynamically generated semantic classes made things possible only using CSS that required editing the HTML/PHP template files before.

Inspired by a recent tutorial by Elliot Jay Stocks on how to add a dynamic body class or ID to WordPress themes and a comment made by Sam Brown, I thought I would share how a basic implementation of this can be added to Textpattern.

Making Textpattern add some Sandbox style

With the use of the TXP template tags and the built in conditional statements, I was able to add some basic dynamically generated classes to my site.

Just give me the code already

<body class="<txp:section /> <txp:if_individual_article> single id-<txp:article_id /> </txp:if_individual_article> <txp:if_category> category <txp:category /> </txp:if_category>">

Make sure the code does not contain any line breaks when adding to your theme. You can download the code snippet here: txp_dynamic_body_classes.txt.

What does that code do

While the simple code snippet doesn’t go to the extent of themes like Sandbox and K2, it adds some basic classes to the based on where you are in the site.

The home page simply generates:

A single post page makes: (Where id-225 is Textpattern’s ID# of the single post.)

The design category in the default section creates:

A post in the asides section creates

The about page generates:

Some examples

You could do some really geeky things like this:

You could even make your own tumblelog.

Hopefully, this will help someone out there…

Those that have visited the site lately may have seen a large banner across the site recently letting you know that big changes were coming. Guess what. They’re finally here.

The new IAMWW

If you are reading this in your feed reader, come on over and check out the new site.

I have been working off and on trying to redesign the site. However, I ended up with far more designs that I hated than ones I liked. The good news is, some of those mock-ups will eventually be made available as public WordPress themes.

The changes to the site

Complete redesign

I am now using Textpattern as a CMS

Support for my WordPress themes have been moved from the comments on those pages to the IAMWW Forums

Things left to clean up and improve on

RSS Feeds for comments- Doesn’t seem to work with current url structure

Iron out all layout inconsistencies

Clean up the CSS a little

Improve the site speed with caching

Convert the comment form from tables (maybe)

Work out the kinks in getting the permalinks to match those I used with WordPress

This list looks pretty long, but I knew if I didn’t flip the switch today who knows when it would have went live. (These changes were originally planned to take place over the past holidays.)

I plan on improving the site more gradually than I have in the past as I dive deeper into TXP. I will also post more later on my reasons for switching and comparisons of experiences with TXP and WP.

So, what do you guys think?
