Cross-Platform Multi-Protocol Instant Messaging Client - Instantbird

Instantbird - A cross-platform multi-protocol open source instant messaging client built. I don’t think I will give up Adium for it.

Firefox Memory Usage on Windows Is Ridiculous

After a few hours of steady usage of Firefox in Windows it begins eating up all of the RAM.They call this a feature:

What I think many people are talking about however with Firefox 1.5 is not really a memory leak at all. It is in fact a feature.

To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited < 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last few session history entries. This can be a lot of data. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web.

Firefox Memory Usage

I feel that 475mb of memory usage is more ridiculous than a “feature” should be. However, I do not plan on leaving Firefox anytime soon. I currently use it on Windows, Mac and Linux. Sidenote, Outlook is awful too.

Apple Releases Safari 3 Beta - for Mac and Windows!

I personally use Firefox on Mac, Windows and Linux. However, it will be interesting to see how Safari performs on Windows. Now you can, with Apple’s release of their web browser for Mac and Windows.

Experience the web, Apple style, with Safari: the fastest, easiest-to-use web browser in the world. With its simple, elegant interface, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web — up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer.

It will be interesting to see if web pages render differently in Safari on Windows as they do in Safari on Mac.

  • Store and serve application resources locally
  • Store data locally in a fully-searchable relational database
  • Run asynchronous Javascript to improve application responsiveness

Google Gears (BETA) is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Flickr Updates Uploadr for Mac OS X

I was happy to see Flickr (my favorite photo sharing service) updated their Flickr Uploadr for Mac OS X to Version 2.3, a Universal Binary. The new version of Uploadr is much faster than the previous. Flickr has added options to select which types of images you are uploading (photo, screenshot, or other) and the ability to set content filters on the images (safe, moderate, and restricted). I have been looking for this to be upgraded for some time now.

Panic Releases Coda 1.0 - Quick First Thoughts

Coda from Panic is meant to be an all-in-one application for your web development needs. It is a text editor, a CSS editor, terminal access, access to documenation (Books), and Transmit (an awesome FTP Client for Mac) all rolled into one app.

I downloaded and installed the trial today. My first impression… If I were buying the application on looks alone, I would have dropped $79.00 today. It is a beautiful application.

The different desktop environment flavors of Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu) have also been updated to the 7.04 release.

I have played with Ubunutu with a dual-boot on my laptop. Since I love my iMac, I rarely use Linux or Windows. However, Ubuntu is one of the best distros I have played around with and I went through a phase where I tried them all.
