Ian has started a contest over at ThemeShaper to foster discussion of ideas on the next default WordPress theme.

The goal:
The goal is to start a discussion about a new default theme for WordPress, something that can help benefit the whole community.
The prizes:
- Grand Prize: Your choice of 4 single-use license iThemes themes.
- First Runner-up: Your choice of 2 single-use license iThemes themes.
- Second Runner-up: Your choice of 1 single-use license iThemes theme.
- Note: Revolution will not be included in this offer.
I am not really sure what will come of this contest or the “ideas” that are proposed. Nonetheless, it should be interesting to see. Check it out and join the discussion – The Next WordPress Default Theme.

Aha, heading over there right now.
Free themes here I come :)
I don’t mean to open a can of worms, but have you heard anything about the Habari Project? Personally, I’m a little disappointed by what I’ve seen of WordPress 2.5 (admittedly, my experience with it is limited) and Habari definitely looks promising.
Actually, more than the software itself, I’m impressed with Michael Heilemann’s design for the admin interface, what he’s dubbed “Monolith”. You can check out his original announcement here.
I’d like to see something like that brought to WordPress.
Andrew, I haven’t even installed WordPress 2.5 for testing yet…
I am somewhat of a CMS junkie and have wanted to take a look at Habari. However, I have attempted on two different occasions in two different environments to install it without any success. Well, the installation completed. But I was not able to login to the admin. I would still love to try it though.
I couldn’t agree more with your interest in Monolith. I linked to it a while back after watching the demo video. I would really like to see that interface adopted and to be able to install/test Habari.
BTW, I also like what you have done with your mod of Simpla over on your site.
From the looks of it, Habari is still in its very earlier stages.
To bad the screencasts are not online.
Also no demo you can view of the front and admin, so that’s really disappointing.
I checked out the link to the flickr set. Doesn’t look that different from WP or any other cms to me.
Brave attempt to start a new blogging platform, but I don’t know.
Habari has some exceptional coders behind it, that’s for sure. I’ll wait a while before I put it on a production site but it seems like it could be very good, especially when you realize how many “big names” are involved with the project.
I agree Ben. I would like to be able to install it and plan around with it. One day I may take some time to get it working on a test site.
