David Yeiser of The Design Canopy has release a new grid-based WordPress theme Trevilian Way. You may remember David as one of the venerable judges of the Sandbox Design Competition.

WordPress: Using Categories and Tags Effectively in Your Template Design

Michael Martin wrote a great post on Problogger on using categories and tags effectively on your blog.

Categories are best imagined as a paper filing system. Each page in the system must be filed away in the appropriate drawer. There are only a set number of drawers, and so each must cover a rather wide blanket.

The addition of tags in WordPress 2.3 really brings the popular blogging tool closer to becoming a full fledged CMS. Categories can now be used to distinguish sections of your site rather than describing the content you are writing about.

A good example: TXP uses “sections” within the site to separate content. Instead of having 25 sections of your site that only contain 2-3 posts you should be able to cut the categories down to a few general ones and use tags to separate your content further.

Apple TV Unboxing and Initial Thoughts

This weekend I replaced my home-grown Windows Media Center HTPC that was in my entertainment center with an Apple TV. I had to decide between buying the kids a new pc and the Apple TV. So I naturally got the new toy and the kids got a good PC to last them a couple of years.

I actually went to Fry’s twice to look at them with plans of buying from the store. However, I was able to hold back long enough to check out the Apple Refurbished Store. With free shipping I was able to save $50.00 and still have the 1 year warranty.

WordPress Updated to 2.2.3 - Use the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin!

I have been itching to try out the WordPress Automatic Update Plugin by Techie Buzz since hearing of it for the Weblog Tools Collection WordPress Plugin Competition. With the recent release of WordPress 2.2.3, I had a chance.

All I can say is it worked almost flawlessly. I upgraded this site, FamilyGeek, and 2 development installations (all in under 5 minutes). The only issue to speak of was in the upgrade of FamilyGeek. I made the mistake of selecting the FAlbum caches during the database tables back-up portion of the upgrade. This eventually timed out and I had to start over without selecting those tables. However, I was more than happy with ease of use and the blazingly fast upgrade.

If you haven’t upgraded your WordPress install to 2.2.3 yet give this plugin a try. Big thanks to Keith Dsouza and Ronald Huereca for such a great tool for the WordPress community!

The Current State of IAMWW

A few days ago I began using a new Tumblog-Hybrid theme on the site. I have received some mixed opinions on the design. A few by a poll and some others via email. So far I have only received 14 votes on the poll.

  • I love it! (36%, 5 Votes)
  • It’s ok. (29%, 4 Votes)
  • Needs improvement. (21%, 3 Votes)
  • Where are the colors? (21%, 3 Votes)
  • I hate it. (0%, 0 Votes) - :)

While the votes for “I love it” would win in a running race, it wouldn’t be by a country mile. The majority of the votes point to it’s ok, needs improvement and some color.

I agree.
