Wanted: Focused Inspiration

I have no problems with finding sites / designs that inspire my designs. However, I find that taking those inspirations and translating them into a design of my own can often times seem like an arduous task.
At least when writing an application or the php for a site, there is a goal that is preset. The goal is to accomplish what the application or site was written to do. In design, the main goal is to make a site that is pleasing to the eye and directs users to the appropriate places…
Does anyone have any tips they may use to turn their inspirations or ideas into reality?
