For digital photo editing on Windows machines, I would typically recommend Google’s Picasa. Picasa’s free, has some fairly advanced editing abilities and allows you to manage all of your digital photos from one application. On Mac’s, you can’t go wrong with Apple’s iPhoto. iPhoto comes pre-installed on Mac’s as part of the iLife suite. It’s a bit more powerful than Picasa; it can manage up to 250k photos. If you have a Mac, need RAW photo editing power and take enough photos to justify the cost, take Aperture for a spin.
With all that being said… This morning I stumbled across Picnik. Picnik is a photo editor similar to Picasa or iPhoto, except it’s web-based. It has some amazing capabilties to be beta and a browser / web-based tool.
“With Picnik you can quickly edit all your online photos from one place. It’s the easiest way on the Web to fix underexposed photos, remove red-eye, or apply effects to your photos.”
Best of all, the service is free. Within minutes I was able to import photos from my Flickr account, take a photo with my iSight, save images to Flickr and create a slideshow. Although I do not foresee giving up iPhoto or Aperture, Picnik may come in handy when I want to do a quick photo edit and upload while away from the house…
